In memory of our buddy, Gulliver

For 15 years, while I walked the trails with my camera, Bob would walk with Gulliver, our much loved (and thoroughly spoiled) springer spaniel. During that time, Gully grew from a young, spirited pup to a senior citizen. Finally, last September (2017), the time came to say goodbye to our buddy. Anyone who has lived with and loved a pet, knows the pain of saying goodbye. Many months have slid by, and I haven’t been able to write about Gulliver. Maybe some day I will, but it’s not yet the right time.

  1. I revisited your site today. Normally I just use the reader to keep up to date on my blogger friend’s posts. As a result, I don’t usually get to see a blogger’s page layout. I like the opening panorama at the top of your page. What are the details about the location and function of that bridge? It looks like an interesting place.

    2. Hi John. It has taken months for me to find your question. I apologize for the delay. The bridge you asked about is the canopy walk at Holden Arboretum, one of my favorite places for trailwalking. The canopy walk, along with the 120 foot tall Emergent Tower, are new additions to the trails at the Arboretum. Opened in the fall of 2016, they were constructed off-site and lifted by helicopter over the trees to where they’re permanently located, so as to avoid damage to the natural site. A climb to the top of the tower, provides a distant view of Lake Erie and the surrounding countryside.

  2. Hello, Carolyn. It’s lovely to meet you. I followed the link to your blog from Ann’s post, on which you were her competition winner. Congratulations! Like you, I was a teacher for many years, working with 11 to 18 year-olds. Like you I love the outdoor life and follow several travel blogs, too. Since retiring, we spend a lot of time away from home, too, or simply out for the day. That you’ve been married for 56 years is a wonderful achievement (our 46th anniversary is in October). I’ll enjoy browsing through some more of your posts, just as soon as I can. Millie

    1. Hi Millie. Sorry to be so slow responding to your comment. It seems that we have a few things in common. I started teaching fresh out of college, but then took some time off when our daughters were little. I taught for 33 years altogether, spending the last year teaching writing to seventh and eighth graders. I did enjoy that, but retirement has been good too. I’m interested in your Viking fiction. I think that’s a fabulous thing to do when you have retired. I will check out your blog!

    1. Thank you, dailywriter. To follow a blog, just scroll down to the bottom right corner of a post. The word “Follow” will appear. Click on it. That’s all there is to it. From then on, that blog will be added to your READER, and you can go to the READER anytime you want to read the blogs you are following.

      2. If it worked, you should be seeing a link to my blog in your “Reader” at the top of your screen when you go to your site. Can you see it? On my computer (and probably yours too) it’s on the top left, right next to the “My Sites” link.

  13. Wow, your photos are gorgeous. I love the close ups of all the birds. The blue heron especially was wonderful. The spread of his wings really captures the moments. Something about them always fascinates me. I really like how your photos scroll across too.

    1. Hi Michael. Thanks for visiting my blog. Especially thanks for your feedback on the scrolling photos. My blog doesn’t support a customized header, so I decided to use the scrolling pictures instead. I’m planning to change them out from time to time (maybe monthly) so they will always be fresh and timely. I’m glad you like the pictures. That particular heron was being especially photogenic.

  20. What a magnificent place and wonderful photos…..I am sitting in amongst grey iron bark and blue skies in Australlia as the temperature climbs. Your diverse autumn colours are a huge contrast to our grey’s muted greens and vibrant blue.

  21. Your photos made me homesick for Ohio, even though I never lived there. I read Malabar Farm in 1988 and was so taken by Bromfield,s word pictures of Ohio that I set a goal to make it to Malabar Farm State park. In June of 1997 I drove from Oregon to Ohio, and found that Ohio was more beautiful than I expected. What really surprised me was how rural it was. Westerns tend to think that everything west of the Mississippi is paved over. I love your Chickadee and Deer photos. The colors are so Autumnal and warm. Just last week I was thinking how I would like to go back to Ohio in the Fall and roam through the woods and fields and see the changing colors. I’ll certainly be back here to see your new posts.

    1. Well, you’ve missed the fall color for this year. Recent winds have left the trees pretty bare. Maybe you can put a return visit on your “bucket list” for future years. Ohio is a beautiful state and most of it is rural. We live in the northeast, east of Cleveland, so we have plenty of hills and lots of wonderful parks.
