The temperature reached 72 sunny degrees today, a great day to walk in the woods. I am sure that one of these days soon we will get slammed with typical November weather, but meanwhile I’m giving thanks for blue skies and warm temps. This was election day here in northeast Ohio, and it’s been a pretty busy day for me, but I still found time for a short walk in the woods. That’s where I snapped these pictures. (Click on a picture to enlarge and see slideshow.)

When I was a kid growing up on my grandfather’s farm in Ohio in the 50s, the first day of pheasant hunting was always in mid-November. One year mid-November would be blowing and frozen, and the next might as easily be sunny and warm like your day out this year. There was no predicting it, but there would be tons of bird life in the fence rows no matter what the weather.

Thanks, Sarah. For me, taking bird pictures requires a long lens (70-300mm), patience, and practice. A bag of peanut chips or sunflower chips helps too. They are much more likely to pose for a photo opp if you offer food.

Gorgeous photos. How did you manage to get so close to the deer? I sometimes see deer when I’m out walking but they are always very nervous of humans.
And we’re having amazingly mild November weather here too. People keep talking about snow coming soon but I would prefer a mild winter. I don’t think we’ll get a mild one but I am optimistic anyway!
LikeLike
In our neighborhood park, the deer co-exist with the hundreds of walkers who enjoy the outdoors. They don’t even seem to be wary of the many dogs the walkers bring with them. I guess it is a result of familiarity and food. People feed the deer even though they aren’t supposed to, so the deer come close for the food. They are great moochers.

My camera is a Nikon D90. For bird shots I use a 70-300mm lens. Otherwise I use the lens that came with the camera; it is 18-105mm. When I first started photographing birds, I was using a Panasonic FZ30. It was good too but a little slower. Thank you for visiting my blog.

Lovely photos – the leaves are still on the trees here, which is v weird. Usually by now, with the drop in temp the wind rises and sweeps them off, sometimes even before they have fully turned autumnal in colouring. We’ve had 2 hard frosts with lollipop cars in the morning but nothing more. 72 degrees? Oh, I could really do with a bit of that here too. Thanks v much for sharing your photographs and morning walk 🙂

You’re pretty lucky, Black-Capped Chickadees only leave in a very small area of Ohio. While their range extends all over Colorado, I’ve yet to see one. It’s a pretty popular bird, and it stays around all through winter. I don’t know too much about it, but I do know the Black-capped Chickadee has one of the most complex vocalizations of all animals, acting as a contact call, an alarm call, to identify an individual, or to indicate recognition of a particular flock.
